He's great whether he's singing country, bluegrass, gospel, soul, jazz or rock-and-roll - and often goes from one to the other in a single concert. He is admired not only by hundreds of thousands of fans, but also by critics and other musicians. His star shone brightest in 1974 when he began playing bass in a new band called New Grass Revival. After a few gigs, he was offered a permanent engagement. His unmistakable tenor and energetic electric bass playing became one of the symbols of the of the band. After New Grass Revival ended in 1990, John recorded several critically acclaimed albums and while also performing on other musicians' records as both vocalist and bassist. He continued to perform primarily solo and with his band (the John Cowan Band), often turning to his newgrass roots. John is a fixture at all the major festivals such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and MerleFest. Since 2010 he has performed regularly with the Doobie Brothers and more recently with the Darin and Brooke Aldridge Band, in a lineup called The HercuLeons, and with the New Grass AllStars.
